Dresser Makeover

This was a curbside rescue that Jay found on the side of the road. It’s a veneer piece and it needed a lot of repair. The drawers all needed new rails. The very top drawer or the “secret drawer” with no drawer pulls needed the full bottom replaced.

Here’s what we did in steps:

  • Removed hardware and cleaned thoroughly from top to bottom
  • Carefully sanded the entire piece with 120 grit sand paper and finished with 220 grit sandpaper
  • Removed the damaged drawer rails
  • Removed the damaged kick plate from the bottom of the dresser
  • Removed the bottom of the “secret drawer”
  • Installed new drawer rails on every drawer
  • Replaced the base of the “secret” drawer
  • Built a new bottom base for the dresser
  • Painted the frame of the dresser (2 coats with a paint sprayer)
  • Stained the drawers (three coats of stain)
  • Added a top to the frame and the drawers (two coats)
  • Added new hardware
  • Applied furniture wax to and lined the inside of the drawers

This wasn’t an easy rescue but I’m happy with the results. I wanted a tall dresser with deep drawers and this dresser checked those boxes. The drawers all function now and slide with ease and aesthetically it turned out the way I wanted it to.
